Does my business address affect my Google rankings?

Updated April 30, 2026 · Honest answer from a Colorado agency that does this work daily.

Short answer

Yes — your business address is one of the strongest factors in Google Map Pack ranking. Google measures the distance from your address to the searcher's location, and businesses closer to the search center rank higher. A Denver business with an address in central Denver ranks better for "Denver" searches than one with a Highlands Ranch address claiming Denver service. PO boxes and virtual offices don't qualify.

  • Address proximity to search center is a top 3 ranking factor
  • Central metro addresses outrank suburban ones for metro searches
  • PO boxes and virtual offices are not allowed
  • Service area businesses can suppress address but lose proximity advantage
  • Multiple locations require separate verified addresses

How Google uses your address

When someone searches "plumber Denver," Google calculates a search center (typically the geographic center of Denver) and ranks businesses partially by their distance from that point. A business at 16th & Tremont outranks one at I-25 & C-470 for that exact query, all else equal.

This is also why "plumber near me" results vary by physical location of the searcher. Two people searching the same query from different parts of Denver get different Map Pack results.

What service area businesses can do

Service area businesses (no public-facing storefront) can hide their address on the GBP and still rank. The trade-off: less proximity advantage. To compete, lean harder on reviews, citations, and city-specific landing pages.

Adding service areas correctly in GBP helps Google understand your coverage. List up to 20 cities/zip codes you actually serve — don't list every city in Colorado hoping for ranking lift (Google penalizes overreach).

Follow-up questions

Can I use my home address?

Yes if you're a service area business and you hide the address. If you accept customers at a home, that's a public address.

What about coworking spaces or shared offices?

Allowed if the address is unique to your business and you have signage and dedicated space. Not allowed for virtual office services.

How does Google verify my address?

Postcard verification (mailed to the address with a code), video verification, or sometimes phone/email for established businesses.
