Why is my Google Business Profile not ranking?

Updated April 30, 2026 · Honest answer from a Colorado agency that does this work daily.

Short answer

Google Business Profile not ranking usually traces to one of five issues: (1) incomplete profile (missing categories, hours, photos, services); (2) insufficient or stale reviews compared to competitors; (3) NAP inconsistencies across the web (different addresses or phone numbers in citations); (4) weak website signals supporting the GBP; (5) proximity disadvantage. Diagnose with a competitor audit — pick the top 3 and see where you fall short on each pillar.

  • Profile incomplete or missing key fields
  • Fewer reviews than competitors, or no recent reviews
  • NAP (name/address/phone) inconsistent across the web
  • Website doesn't support the GBP with location signals
  • Physical address too far from search center (proximity)

Run a competitor audit first

Search for your primary keyword + city. Note the top 3 Map Pack results. For each: count their reviews, check their average rating, look at how many photos they have, see how many services they list, and check their primary category.

Then compare to yours. Wherever you're meaningfully behind, that's a fix priority.

The most common fixes

Add missing categories (especially the primary). Upload 30+ photos if you have under 10. Fill out every service in the Services section with descriptions. Set accurate special hours for holidays. Add attributes (women-owned, veteran-owned, wheelchair-accessible, etc.) where applicable.

Fix NAP inconsistencies by running a citation audit (BrightLocal, Whitespark, or manual). Inconsistent listings across Yelp, BBB, Foursquare, and niche directories confuse Google and suppress rankings.

Build website signals: dedicated location page, embedded Google map, structured data (LocalBusiness schema), and an address that exactly matches your GBP.

Follow-up questions

How long should it take to see GBP ranking improvements?

30–90 days for most fixes. Citation cleanup and review velocity take the longest to compound.

Is my GBP suspended or just not ranking?

Different problems. A suspended profile shows a notice in your dashboard. A non-ranking but active profile shows up in search but not in the top results.

Can a competitor sabotage my GBP?

Rarely. Google has gotten better at detecting fake negative reviews and false suggested edits. Report any suspicious activity through the GBP support flow.
