Will AI search replace Google?
Updated April 30, 2026 · Honest answer from a Colorado agency that does this work daily.
Short answer
AI search will not fully replace Google, but it's already taking meaningful share. Best estimates as of 2026: AI engines (ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) capture 15–25% of queries that previously went to Google, especially research and how-to queries. Google retains dominance for local search, navigational queries, and visual searches. Most businesses should optimize for both — traditional SEO and GEO — for at least the next 5 years.
- AI search has captured 15–25% of total search share by 2026
- Google retains dominance in local, navigational, and visual search
- AI takes share from informational and research queries fastest
- Both will coexist for at least 5–10 years
- Optimize for both: SEO + GEO, not one or the other
Where AI search is winning
Research-heavy queries ("compare X vs Y," "how do I do Z"), long-form questions where users want a synthesized answer rather than a list of links, and follow-up questions where conversation context matters.
Younger users (under 35) are migrating fastest. ChatGPT and Perplexity have become default starting points for many tasks that used to begin with Google.
Where Google is holding ground
Local search ("plumber near me") still flows through Google because Google Business Profile and Maps integration is unmatched. AI engines don't have comparable local data.
Navigational searches (looking for a specific website) and visual searches (Google Lens, image-based queries) also remain Google strongholds.
Real-time information, shopping, and any query benefiting from Google's index breadth.
Follow-up questions
Should I stop investing in SEO and just do GEO?
No. Most GEO tactics also help SEO, and Google still drives the majority of online traffic. Invest in both proportionally.
What about Bing?
Bing has gained share through ChatGPT integration but remains a distant second to Google in raw search volume.
Will Google launch their own AI to compete?
Already did — Gemini and AI Overviews are Google's response. Google AI Overviews now appear on 30%+ of queries and are eating into traditional click-through.
