Short answer

Google Maps ranks contractors on three things: relevance (does your profile and website match the search), distance (how close your verified address is to the searcher), and prominence (reviews, links, and activity). Service-area businesses can't change distance, so in zip codes farther from your office you win with stronger relevance and prominence — detailed service pages, steady reviews that mention towns, and regular profile updates.

  • Distance is measured from your verified business address, not your service-area list
  • Listing 20 zip codes in your profile does not make you rank in all of them
  • Reviews that mention the town and job type strengthen relevance in that area
  • A website page per real service area you work in supports the profile

Why you rank near the office but not across town

A contractor based in 80920 (Briargate) usually shows up in the map results for nearby zip codes like 80924 and 80908 first. Farther areas such as 80906 or Fountain (80817) are harder because a competitor sits closer to that searcher.

Google does not let you move that center point. Fake addresses and virtual offices are against Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.

How to win farther-out areas the safe way

Build one genuinely useful page for each town you really serve — local job photos, the neighborhoods you cover, common local problems. Avoid copy-paste pages that only swap the town name; Google treats those as low quality.

Ask happy customers in those towns for reviews and mention the job in your reply. Post weekly updates and photos to your Google profile.

Follow-up questions

Should I make a page for every zip code?

No. Thin pages per zip code look like spam to Google. Mention the zip codes you serve inside real town or neighborhood pages instead.

Can I hide my address and still rank?

Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address, but Google still uses the verified location to measure distance.

Does El Paso County vs Douglas County matter?

Searchers rarely search by county. Town names (Monument, Castle Rock, Parker) matter far more than county names.
